Four beauty queens in the region are vying for the prestigious crown and title of Miss Universe Philippines 2020.
Christelle Anjali Abello (Aklan), Joecel Marie Robenta (Antique), Rabiya Mateo (Iloilo City), and Kim Chi Crizaldo (Iloilo province) will represent Western Visayas at the grand coronation night at the Baguio Country Club on October 25.
It was learned that the preliminary interview is scheduled for October 21 while the National Costume, Swimsuit, and Evening Gown competitions have been set for October 23.
The finale airing on GMA-7 will have no live audience due to the COVID-19 pandemic but will see Gazini Christiana Jordi Ganados, Miss Universe Philippines 2019, crown her successor.
Shamcey Supsup-Lee, national director of this year’s franchise and herself a Miss Universe Philippines titleholder, said they are looking for “socially-conscious” beauty queens to represent the country.
The Philippines has never been short of “beauty and brains” in the pageant arena. Among the more recent triumphs for the country were that of Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray’s in 2018 and Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach’s in 2015.
Both Gray and Wurtzbach brought home the Miss Universe crown, bringing the country’s Miss Universe crown total to four to include that of Gloria Diaz’s in 1969 and Margarita Moran’s in 1973.
For over 50 years, it was the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) that was the home of aspiring Filipino beauty queens. This year, a new organization took over the responsibility from BPCI to continue the quest for another Miss Universe crown for the Philippines./(Boy Ryan Zabal/INews-Aklan Bureau)
