KALIBO, Aklan–Residents of Badio, Numancia, Aklan have opposed the plan to establish a crematorium, citing health issues and environmental impact.

The crematorium would be located at the back portion of the existing Badio cemetery, which is near the densely populated neighborhood.

Brgy. Capt. Victor Crispino said the crematorium plan was first presented to the Sangguniang Bayan of Numancia, but the owners of the crematorium have yet to conduct a public consultation.

In their petition, the opposition claimed the crematorium for COVID-19 related deaths will pose a serious threat to the health of the residents.

“There is a possibility that the COVID-19 virus may leak out of the crematorium, affecting not only the residents of Badio but all Numancianons,” the petition said.

Crispino shared the same concerns of his constituents, specifically over the toxic air emissions and the location of the crematory.

“If the crematorium is detrimental to the surrounding area, I would not hesitate to stop the operations of the crematorium services,” he said in a radio interview on September 29.

It was learned the proponent from Calasiao, Pangasinan, JustRod Crematorium, has already secured a lease contract to use a portion of the LGU-owned cemetery in Badio.

It also secured last week a business permit from the Office of the Municipal Mayor, revealing its business address to be in Badio, Numancia, Aklan.

So far, more than 300 residents of Badio have signed the petition against the proposed crematorium.

Barangay-wide signature campaigns in the adjacent barangays of Poblacion and Dongon East have also been launched opposing the same.

The militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan Aklan has likewise expressed resistance to the plan. (Boy Ryan Zabal/iNews-Aklan/Boracay Bureau)
