ILOILO CITY–After attending the blessing and inauguration of the Alta Tierra Village Substation of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Iloilo City despite the city still being under the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) at that time and in violation of the executive order against mass gatherings, Iloilo City mayor Jerry Treñas recently issued a legal order mandating BFP-6 regional director Jerry Candido and the city’s lone district Rep. Julienne “Jamjam” Baronda to render community service as the penalty for the infraction.

In a letter signed by the city mayor and sent to Candido and Baronda, he said the two must comply with the order in the interest of fairness and equity.

“In relation thereto, and in the spirit of fairness and equity, your compliance with the imposition of community service is sought. Please be informed that the Iloilo City COVID-19 Compliance Team, headed by Mr. Nestor Canong, is tasked to ensure and monitor compliance thereto,” Treñas wrote.

“Although we appreciate your zeal and enthusiasm to public service, but moving forward, please be advised that the health and safety of everyone is our highest priority, bearing in mind that until and unless we are finally free from the effects of COVID-19 in our communities, strict compliance with health protocols must always be observed,” the city chief executive further averred.

There was, however, no mention when the imposed community service work is to start or how many days the community service work will last for the two government officials.

It may be recalled that on June 10, BFP-Iloilo City conducted the blessing and inauguration of their new substation at Alta Tierra Village in Jaro district with both Candido and Baronda invited as guests.

There was also supposed to be a catered lunch immediately following the affair but BFP-Iloilo City officials said the prepared food was ultimately just packed for distribution to the guests to limit the period of time for the occasion in observance of MECQ restrictions. (N. Glenn Aragon/iNEWS)
