ILOILO—As Typhoon Storm Auring nears the provinces of Iloilo and Aklan in the latest Severe Weather Bulletin released by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration- Department of Science and Technology (PAGASA-DOST) at 8:00 am, the first typhoon to visit the country this year has decelerated a bit and is now estimated at 370 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, raging in the direction of west-northwest of the archipelago.
The storm has slowed down but only a bit, measuring maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 80 km/hour.
Places in Iloilo province that are now placed under Typhoon Signal No. 1 are the northern towns of San Rafael, Barotac Viejo, Lemery, Ajuy, Sara, Concepcion, San Dionisio, Batad, Estancia, Balasan, and Carles, all in the fifth district.
In Iloilo, two barangays in the town of Balasan conducted a pre-emptive evacuation of 130 individuals representing 29 families in risk areas and brought them to the Zaragosa Elementary School and Malapoc Day Care Center, respectively.
Meanwhile, all fast-craft and ro-ro trips in the province from Dumangas and Iloilo City bound for Bacolod City and other destination ports have been canceled since 5 pm yesterday, February 20.
The Provincial Civil Defense Operations Center and Safety Office has been monitoring the situation, on alert for any eventuality due to the typhoon./(N. Glenn Aragon/iNEWS)
