BACOLOD CITY–Four suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed, while 13 others were arrested Tuesday morning, during an encounter with the police elite Special Action Force troopers in Brgy. Tabu, Ilog, Negros Occidental.

According to Lt. Col. Ryan Manongdo, commander of the Special Action Battalion 6, four of the 14 arrested rebels, including Nilda Natan Bertulano, secretary of the NPA South West Front, were injured in the more than one-hour gunfight.

A SAF trooper was also slightly injured in the gun battle.

Recovered from the encounter site were four M16 assault rifles, Manongdo revealed.

He said that SAB 6 troopers of the PNP and troopers of the 2nd Negros Occidental Police Mobile Force Company chanced upon the group of Bertulano, estimated to be composed of about 20 armed men, while they were conducting combat operations in the area.

Bertulano and the three other injured NPA rebels were treated by SAF combat medics before they were transported to a hospital for further treatment, said Manongdo.

However, one of the rebels died on the way to the hospital.

The 10 other arrested rebels were turned over by SAF troopers to the Ilog Police Station for investigation. (Eugene Y. Adiong/iNEWS-Bacolod/Negros Bureau)
