ILOILO–At least eight persons believed to be members of the communist terrorist armed group New People’s Army (NPA) were killed following an encounter with personnel from the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (PA 3ID) in Brgy. Alimodias in the town of Miagao yesterday morning.

This was among the initial information relayed to members of the local media by 1st Lt. Elma Grace Abulencia, deputy spokesperson of the said Army unit.

According to her, the eight casualties are known NPA rebels in the area, although information as to their identities is yet to be released pending further investigation of the incident.

Meanwhile, Major Gen. Benedict Arevalo, the PA 3ID commander, said he received reports that more than eight persons were killed in the gunfight but they are yet to verify it. “We are still confirming these reports,” he stated.

Abulencia added there were a lot of landmines scattered in the area, the reason government troops were more careful in their pursuit of the rebels. The soldiers first fired artillery shells in the area before making their approach.

Recovered from the encounter site following the clash were three M-16 rifles and an AK-47 rifle, four anti-personnel landmines, three detonators, a projector, subversive documents with “high intelligence value”, and some personal belongings, according to Capt. Kim Apitong, spokesperson of the 3ID.

To note, members of the 301st Infantry Brigade thru the 61st Infantry Battalion and the 33rd Division Reconnaissance Company launched a military operation in the area around 6 am yesterday, December 1.

This, following reports from the local community that members of the Suyak, Sentro de Grabedad (SDG) Platoon of the NPA’s Southern Front (SF)-Panay were massing in the said barangay for a meeting to talk about their planned attacks and extortion activities in the area, according to Arevalo.

NPA rebels traditionally intensify their attacks against civilian and military targets in the days leading to the founding anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines of the 26th of December. (N. Glenn Aragon/iNews)
