KALIBO, Aklan–The province of Aklan has confirmed five new cases of the Delta variant in two towns: Banga and Ibajay.
The Provincial Health Office-Aklan reported on September 14, 2021, that all but one have recovered from the highly contagious strain.
Tagged as recovered were three male residents, aged between 39 and 46, from Banga, Aklan, and a 54-year old woman from Ibajay, Aklan; a 58-year old male from Ibajay, however, succumbed to COVID-19 related complications.
The specimens were collected by the Western Visayas Medical Center subnational laboratory from August 2 to 16 for whole genome sequencing by the University of the Philippines – Philippine Genome Center.
To date, Aklan has tallied a total of 27 Delta variant cases, five of which from the capital town of Kalibo and three from Numancia.
PHO-Aklan has directed the local government units to conduct immediate tracing of the close contacts of the five most recent Delta variant cases.
For his part, Provincial Health Officer II Dr. Victor Santamaria urged the public to remain vigilant, get vaccinated, and adhere to health guidelines.
The Delta variant is declared a “variant of concern” by the World Health Organization as it causes more severe illness than the other strains of COVID-19.
As of September 12, the Department of Health-Western Visayas recorded four Beta variant cases, three Theta variant cases, and one Alpha variant case in the province of Aklan. (Boy Ryan Zabal/iNEWS-Aklan/Boracay Bureau)
