CAFGU member in Calinog shot dead in chance encounter with NPA rebels

ILOILO–A member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) Active Auxiliary was shot and killed by a group of armed men believed to be New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Brgy. Masaroy in Calinog, Iloilo this morning, October 14.

According to initial information from other CAA personnel who were with Dwight Mecenas at the time of the incident, they were fetching water when a group of armed men believed to be New People’s Army rebels chanced upon them and immediately fired in their direction.

Mecenas was killed on the spot after he was hit in different parts of the body.

According to the witnesses, the NPA rebels were only about five to six meters away from the soldiers and CAA members when they started firing shots at the hapless victims.

Meanwhile, members of the Calinog Municipal Police Station (MPS) were advised to postpone going to Brgy. Masaroy to conduct an investigation into the incident as Philippine Army soldiers were still carrying out clearing operations in the said village.

According to P/Capt. Dadjie Delima, Calinog police chief, personnel from the crime laboratory of the Police Regional Office (PRO-6) based in Camp Delgado were also unable to proceed to the crime scene.

Brgy. Masaroy is estimated to be 20 kilometers from the Calinog town proper.

UNFULFILLED DREAMS

Meanwhile, Punong Barangay Alex Hortada of Brgy. Camalongo, Calinog where the victim resided only has good things to say about Mecenas.

“Ang bata nga ‘ni, nagtinguha man nga makabulig sa ginikanan niya kay ‘ti pigado man sanda. Kaso amu pa na ang naabtan niya. (Handum nya tani) kun makapasar sya sa CAFGU (Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit), kun pila ka tuig, maka-training siya sa Army para makabulig siya sang ensakto sa ginikanan niya [This kid, he strived hard to help his parents since they are poor. Unfortunately, this is what happened to him. He dreamt of passing the CAFGU training and then in a few years’ time train for the Army so he can fully help his parents],” Hortada said. (N.
