ILOILO CITY–Officials of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) are in disbelief as to how village leaders in Brgy. Tanza Bonifacio, City Proper, were completely unaware and unable to monitor a “pauwak” or “tupada” (illegal cockfight) that happened right under their very noses yesterday, May 16.
This, as 8 individuals were arrested and hauled to the ICPO headquarters after they were caught in the act of engaging in illegal cockfighting in the said barangay.
According to the ICPO report, aside from the apprehension of the eight suspects for engaging in the illegal activity, also confiscated from them were 14 fighting cocks, the supposed bet money of P3,440, and an improvised iron ring with a net.
Those caught were identified as Elmer Besol, 62 years old, a resident of Brgy. Boulevard, Molo; Stephen Complito, 40, of Brgy. Tanza Bonifacio, City Proper; Ben Germinanda, 40, of Brgy. Tanza Baybay, City Proper; Pabs Berciles, 37, of Brgy. Concepcion, City Proper; Wesley Iturriaga, 21, of Brgy. Monica, City Proper; Joebert Ong, 42, of Brgy. Tanza Baybay; Clark Tan, 20, of Brgy. Tanza Baybay; and Rene Losanta, 30, of Brgy. Tanza Baybay.
When interviewed, City Intelligence Unit (CIU) chief P/Lt. Col. Rene Obregon, Jr., said that they had been conducting monitoring and surveillance operations against the said illegal cockfight organizers for about a month already so it would be almost impossible for barangay officials not to know the activities of this group or the conduct of pauwak events in their area.
