We advocate safe biking for everyone—ICPO

ILOILO CITY–The leadership of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO)’s Police Precinct 1 that has operational control over the port area in Muelle Loney will no longer wait for accidents to happen before acting on the concerns of barangay officials about biking in the port operations area.

This was the statement of P/Capt. Shella Mae Sangrines, PP1 chief and ICPO spokesperson, the reason why they have now regulated recreational biking activities in the said area since “there are no bike lanes there and many heavy equipment pass through the area 24/7”.

In fact, according to the city police spokesperson, biking for recreational purposes is already prohibited on the entire stretch of the Muelle Loney Boulevard starting last Friday, September 17.

Sangrines said what worried them most was how those seen biking in the area were minors who are restricted from going outside their homes amid another slight surge in new COVID-19 cases recently.

“We in the ICPO are pro-biking, but ang amon gusto i-promote at the same time…especially para sa mga pamatan-on, is safe biking [what we also want to promote, especially among the youth, is safe biking],” she stressed.

While acknowledging that the Muelle Loney area offers unique sights and experiences that attract bikers not just from the city but from neighboring towns of Iloilo Province as well, Sangrines was adamant that it should be off-limits to recreational bikers.

“I know the place is clean and has Instagram-worthy views and scenery, ambulant vendors they can buy food from, and photographers who would shoot their photos for a small fee, but there are other equally good biking areas in the city with the same picture-perfect surroundings that are not dangerous,” she explained.

It may be recalled that only days ago, Muelle Loney Punong Barangay Edgar Roga complained of bike riders frequenting their barangay and engaging in horseplay and directly or indirectly causing untoward incidents. (N. Glenn Aragon/iNEWS)
