ILOILO–You know the election season is just around the bend when politicians start throwing punches at each other even when the interests of both are served with the approval of proposed legislation.

Recently, Iloilo City mayor Jerry Treñas hogged the headlines when he said in a Facebook post that the proposal for an Iloilo City Hospital failed to pass third reading in the House of Representatives “because of the opposition of a Congressman from a Party List coming from Iloilo Province”.

Feeling alluded to despite Treñas not mentioning her name, AAMBIS-Owa partylist Rep. Sharon Garin answered the allegations and denied opposing the measure authored by Iloilo City lone district Rep. Julienne “Jamjam” Baronda during the House deliberations, saying she is in fact 100% in support of it.

“Pag-sponsor nya (Cong. Baronda), in the period of debates, waay gid ko na ya nag-debate. Actually I supported it. Ang call ko kay Jamjam at that time, before we even presented it sa House, siling ko ‘Jam, name man tani indi lang Uswag (Hospital) kay bal-an ta man na nga that is the name of the partylist kag a political party. That’s not allowed by law.’ And she did the amendment on the floor [When she sponsored the measure, in the period of debates, I don’t remember debating against it. Actually I supported it. My call to Jamjam at that time, before we even presented it in the House, was, and I said, ‘it would be better not to call it Uswag Hospital since we all know that such is a name of a partylist and a political party. That’s not allowed by law.’ And she did the amendment on the floor],” Garin recounted.

She said Baronda agreed with her and readily changed the name of the proposed hospital by dropping “Uswag” to make it just Iloilo City Hospital.

The said measure has just passed the second reading and is now “going for the third reading,” according to the AAMBIS-Owa representative.

Meanwhile, she also said that Baronda would need to get at least 150 votes from their fellow congressmen for the proposed bill to be approved for the third and final reading. “Amo na ang system sang Congress eh. It’s a vote by majority, indi nga a vote by one [That’s the system in Congress. It’s a vote by majority, not a vote by one].”

Again, Garin reiterated that she is in full support of Baronda’s proposed measure but it may have failed to get past the third reading because “indi pa enough ang support sang iban nga congressmen [the support from other congressmen is not yet enough]”.

“Kinahanglan lang na nga…work on it lang until you get all the support of the congressmen and the leadership [What you need is…work on it until you get all the support of the congressmen and the House leadership],” the Ilonggo legislator concluded. (N. Glenn Aragon/iNews)
