ILOILO CITY—In this time of a pandemic, national and local officials are expected to tighten their purse strings against spending for things that are not really important nor urgent. The national Liga ng mga Barangay (LNB), or at least its local chapter here in Iloilo City, however, may not have received the memo as it is reportedly spending P19,800 for each delegate who will attend a three-day convention to talk about postponing next year’s joint barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, among others.

According to Liga ng mga Barangay president and ex-officio Sangguniang Panlungsod member Irene Ong, the said convention, which will also tackle the request to give to the barangays the benefits due them rather than direct it to the national government, is scheduled from December 6 to 8 with the Iloilo Convention Center (ICC) as convention venue.

Those who have already confirmed their attendance are some 100 participants composed of barangay captains, SK officials, and village councilors, depending on which barangays still have funding for such a gathering late in the year.

The long-time city legislator also said delegates will be accommodated at the posh Marriott Hotel for the duration of the two-night and three-day confab. Each room at the said hotel will accommodate two convention attendees while their breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served at the ICC. Ong himself disclosed the amount to be paid for each attendee.

He also said that the LNB chapters in the provinces of Antique and Capiz here in Western Visayas have already finished their own conventions on the same subjects.

To note, the synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections are originally scheduled for December 5, 2022. (N. Glenn Aragon/iNews)
